Monique Thomas
Artworks from Alicante
Monique Thomas was born in Algeria in 1949. In 1962 she emigrated to France and now lives in Alicante, Spain.
In Marseille began her artistic training at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. In 1978 she went to Paris to work and teach painting. Since 1980 she has devoted herself exclusively to painting. When Monique Thomas begins to paint a painting, it is never done with grand gestures. On the contrary. She rather prepares herself for an "archaeological excavation". She has to touch and mark the canvas, leave traces on it, even before she starts painting. She mixes the past with the present to get to the future. The painters who inspire her often come from the Art Brut movements.
Her absolute role model is Antoni Tápies, whom she appreciates for the strength of his work, the boldness of his choice of materials and the great freedom of his art. She considers art as life. And life is rough, battered, ugly and beautiful. Everything starts with an intuition, even a strong emotion. Then it's about exploring the inner power that is offered to her. To discover it and to tame it. Painting for Monique Thomas is an open door. A door to another.
