Abigail Stern

Multi-layered works - Exclusive

Abigail Stern

Abigail Stern lives and works in New York. She studied both art and art history. Her works have a very graphic effect. She glues paper to paper, paints photos, fabrics, objects and wood. The formal rigor is broken by photos, wood and paint. In doing so, she has further developed the Sumi-e art.

In the Far Eastern countries of Asia, the traditional art of Sumi-e has a long and rich history, dating back to the ancient Zen masters. This art form, also known as "ink painting", is characterized by its simplicity, elegance and deep connection with nature.

The name "Sumi-e" comes from the Japanese words "Sumi" for ink and "e" for painting and refers to the use of ink as the main medium. The artists use traditional brushes and inkstones to create their works on rice paper or silk. Skillful brushstrokes and economical use of color create images that are characterized by a deep aesthetic and spiritual meaning. Stern also uses traditional materials such as Chinese ink, handmade paper from Nepal and Tibet and rice paper. The result is poetic collages, multi-layered and evocative.
